Crystal Red Shrimp require stable and pristine water conditions, making them suitable for more experienced shrimp keepers. They are peaceful and should be kept in a dedicated shrimp-only tank.
Crystal Red Shrimp are a selectively bred variety of bee shrimp, known for their striking red and white coloration arranged in banded patterns. Grading is based on color coverage, with higher grades having more white and symmetrical patterns. They have a soft, translucent body and long antennae.
1-2 years
Omnivorous. They primarily feed on biofilm, algae, and organic detritus. Provide them with specialized shrimp food and mineral-rich supplements.
Crystal Red Shrimp are prized for their beauty and are popular in shrimp-dedicated tanks. They require more attention than Neocaridina varieties, but reward aquarists with color, charm, and breeding success in the right environment.

Peaceful; best kept in colonies or with other gentle tank mates
Feed small portions once a day. Offer high-quality shrimp food, algae wafers, blanched spinach or zucchini, and ensure biofilm is available in the tank. Avoid overfeeding to prevent water pollution.
Egg layers; breed readily in stable, soft, slightly acidic water
Breeding is possible in a stable environment with soft, acidic water. Females carry eggs under their abdomen for 3–4 weeks until the shrimplets hatch. Provide moss and microflora for newborns. No larval stage – shrimplets are mini versions of adults.
pH: 5.8–6.8, Temp: 70–78°F, Hardness: 4–6 dGH, Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm, Nitrate < 10 ppm, No copper
Prone to stress and health issues if parameters are unstable. Molting complications, bacterial infections, and copper poisoning are common in poorly maintained tanks. Soft, acidic water and consistency are critical.
Peaceful and shy. They may become stressed in the presence of aggressive tank mates.
Crystal Red Shrimp are gentle and thrive in mature, planted tanks with leaf litter, moss, and hiding spaces. They form colonies and constantly graze on biofilm and algae. Sudden parameter changes can lead to deaths, so consistency is key.
The Crystal Red Shrimp (Caridina cf. cantonensis) is a gem in the freshwater shrimp hobby. Originally developed through selective breeding from wild bee shrimp, they are admired for their bold red and white color bands. Grades range from low (mostly red) to high (white-heavy patterns with defined symmetry). Their small size and sensitivity to water conditions make them best suited for experienced aquarists. A soft, acidic, and stable environment is essential for their health and breeding. They are best kept in species-only or very peaceful community tanks with ample hiding places and biofilm-rich surfaces. Despite their delicate nature, they breed readily under optimal conditions. Shrimplets need protection and micro-food to survive, and mossy setups are ideal. These shrimp not only elevate the aesthetics of planted tanks but also reflect the keeper’s attention to detail and care quality. Crystal Reds are living art in motion.
