Crystal Black Shrimp, also known as CBS, are another highly sought-after freshwater shrimp species. They have a black and white color pattern, which can vary in intensity and grading. Like Crystal Red Shrimp, Crystal Black Shrimp require stable water conditions and a dedicated shrimp-only tank. They are peaceful and should be kept with non-aggressive tank mates.

Crystal Black Shrimp feature bold black and white banding patterns. The contrast between their deep black and bright white coloration varies based on their grade. They are small, ornamental, and have long antennae and a graceful appearance.
1-2 years
Omnivorous. They primarily feed on biofilm, algae, and organic detritus. Provide them with specialized shrimp food and mineral-rich supplements.
Crystal Black Shrimp are ideal for serious hobbyists who love delicate, beautiful invertebrates. Though they need more care than Neocaridina shrimp, their elegance and unique look make them a rewarding species for peaceful, nature-style tanks.

Very peaceful and shy, best in species tanks or with gentle fish
Feed once daily with shrimp pellets, biofilm, algae wafers, or blanched vegetables. Avoid overfeeding. Provide Indian almond leaves or moss to promote biofilm and microbial growth.
Females carry eggs under their tails; breed in freshwater when stable conditions are met
Crystal Blacks will breed in well-maintained freshwater aquariums. Females carry fertilized eggs under their abdomen for 3–4 weeks. Baby shrimp (shrimplets) hatch fully formed and feed on biofilm and microorganisms. Avoid filter intakes that may trap fry.
pH: 5.5–6.8, Temp: 68–76°F, GH: 4–6 dGH, KH: Low to 0, Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm, Nitrate: < 10 ppm, Avoid copper
Sensitive to water fluctuations and copper. Molting issues and stress from sudden changes can lead to death. Maintain a mature, clean, and stable tank. Use RO water with shrimp-specific remineralizers.
Peaceful and shy. They may become stressed in the presence of aggressive tank mates.
Crystal Black Shrimp are peaceful invertebrates best kept in planted or mossy aquariums. They prefer stable, acidic water and benefit from driftwood, leaf litter, and low lighting. They’re active grazers but hide when stressed.
The Crystal Black Shrimp (Caridina cf. cantonensis “Black Bee”) is a selectively bred version of wild bee shrimp, developed for its striking black and white coloration. Similar to the Crystal Red Shrimp, they come in various grades based on the intensity and symmetry of the color bands. They are a favorite among shrimp keepers for nano and planted aquariums. However, their sensitivity to parameters means they require pristine, mature setups with soft, acidic water. Due to their small size and vulnerability, they should only be housed with the most peaceful tank mates. Leaf litter and moss help maintain microflora and offer hiding spots. Breeding is relatively easy under proper conditions, and shrimplets resemble miniature adults upon hatching. With their unique coloration and calm behavior, Crystal Black Shrimp are a centerpiece species for aquarists who prioritize water quality, aesthetics, and species-specific care.
