Porcellio laevis, commonly called the Smooth Woodlouse, is a fast-growing and highly active isopod species. Known for its smooth, glossy exoskeleton and large size compared to other isopods, it is popular in the isopod hobby and as a clean-up crew in bioactive enclosures.
Smooth, shiny exoskeleton; gray to brown coloration, though selectively bred morphs (such as 'Dairy Cow') are popular in the hobby.
2–3 years (in captivity with proper care)
Detritivore; consumes decaying leaves, wood, vegetables, and supplemental protein and calcium.
Porcellio laevis is one of the most rewarding isopods to keep due to its fast growth, activity, and variety of color morphs.
Easy – hardy and prolific breeder.
5 gallons for a colony
Neutral to slightly acidic substrate preferred
Not applicable (terrestrial species; calcium supplementation required).
70–80°F (21–27°C)
Up to 20 mm (0.8 inches)
Springtails, other non-predatory isopods, compatible in bioactive reptile and amphibian setups.
Predatory invertebrates and animals that may prey on them; unsuitable for very arid setups.
Porcellio laevis
Porcellionidae
Europe (now cosmopolitan)
Very social and thrives in large colonies.
Feed leaf litter, decayed wood, vegetables, fish food, and calcium sources like cuttlebone. Supplement with protein occasionally.
Reproduces quickly in moist, warm environments; females carry eggs in a marsupium until hatching.
Provide moist substrate, leaf litter, and hides. Breeds readily when conditions are stable; juveniles grow quickly.
Humidity: 60–80%, Temperature: 70–80°F (21–27°C), Substrate: Moist with ventilation.
Problems occur with low humidity, lack of calcium, or overcrowding. Sensitive to stagnant, overly wet conditions.
Very active, bold, and social; often seen on the surface foraging.
Bold scavenger, spends a lot of time in the open compared to more reclusive isopods.
Porcellio laevis is native to Europe but widely spread across the globe. It is larger than many other isopods, reaching up to 20 mm in length, and is highly adaptable. It thrives in humid enclosures with good ventilation. Because of its bold nature, it is a favorite for bioactive terrariums and isopod enthusiasts. It breeds readily in captivity, with females producing multiple broods annually.
