Slender, laterally compressed body with silver to copper coloration and a distinctive black lateral stripe running from the head to the tail. Forked tail gives the appearance of scissors. Fins are mostly transparent with subtle orange-red hints. Males are slightly more slender and vividly colored; females are rounder and paler.

Omnivorous; feeds on high-quality flakes, micro pellets, frozen foods, and live foods such as daphnia, brine shrimp, and micro worms. Occasional blanched vegetables like zucchini or spinach enhance health and coloration.
