Slender, laterally compressed body with silvery metallic sheen and subtle green reflections. Eyes are a vivid emerald-green, giving the species its name. Fins are mostly transparent with slight orange or red tinges. Males are slightly slimmer with brighter eye coloration; females are rounder and paler.

Omnivorous; feeds on high-quality flakes, micro pellets, frozen foods, and live foods such as daphnia, brine shrimp, and micro worms. Occasional blanched vegetables can supplement their diet and maintain health.
