Slender, laterally compressed body with a bright red-orange base color and distinctive black blotches along the body. Fins are mostly transparent with subtle red or orange hints. Males are slightly more slender and vividly colored; females are rounder and paler.

Omnivorous; feeds on high-quality flakes, micro pellets, frozen foods, and live foods such as daphnia, brine shrimp, and micro worms. Occasional blanched vegetables like zucchini or spinach can supplement their diet and enhance coloration.
