Rubber Lip Plecos are excellent algae grazers for medium to large community aquariums. Their peaceful nature, adaptability, and unique feeding behavior make them an interesting and functional addition. Providing hiding spots, moderate water flow, and a varied diet ensures long-term health and activity.

Large aggressive cichlids, boisterous barbs, or very small fish that may be harassed or outcompeted for food. Avoid overcrowding.
Chaetostoma sp.
Loricariidae
South America β Andes and Amazon river tributaries; inhabits rocky streams and rivers with moderate to strong flow.
Semi-solitary; generally peaceful toward other fish. Can be kept singly or in small groups if enough hiding spaces are provided. Males may display mild territorial behavior during feeding.
Feed sinking algae wafers daily, supplemented with blanched vegetables and occasional protein-rich foods. Ensure enough food reaches the bottom where they graze. Avoid overfeeding to maintain water quality.

Sensitive to poor water quality. Can develop ich, fungal infections, or barbel damage if stressed or kept on sharp substrates. Requires stable water parameters.
Peaceful, bottom-dwelling, and nocturnal. Spends most of the day hiding under rocks, driftwood, or plants and becomes more active at night. Generally compatible with most community fish.
The Rubber Lip Pleco is a South American catfish native to fast-flowing rivers and streams of the Andes and Amazon regions. Its soft, rubbery lips allow it to adhere to surfaces and scrape algae effectively without damaging delicate plants or aquarium decor. Unlike larger plecos, it remains manageable in medium-sized aquariums, typically reaching 6β8 inches in length. The species is hardy, tolerant of a range of water parameters, and peaceful, making it suitable for community setups with other non-aggressive fish. A well-planted tank with rocks, driftwood, and moderate current mimics its natural habitat and keeps it active and healthy.
