A balanced diet of high-quality flakes or micro-pellets should be the staple, supplemented with live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia several times a week. Vegetables such as blanched spinach, cucumber, or zucchini can be offered for added vitamins and fiber.
Livebearer – females give birth to free-swimming fry every 4–6 weeks
Like all guppies, Pin Tail Guppies are prolific breeders. Females can produce fry every 4–6 weeks, and a single mating can result in multiple batches due to sperm storage. Fry should be separated or provided with plenty of dense plant cover to ensure survival. Gestation lasts around 21–30 days, and fry grow quickly when fed a protein-rich diet.
Maintain clean, well-filtered water with stable parameters. Keep pH between 6.8 and 7.8 and hardness in the moderate to high range. Weekly water changes of 25–30% help keep nitrate levels low and maintain vibrant coloration. Avoid overly strong water currents to protect their delicate tail shape.
Susceptible to fin rot, ich, and bacterial infections if kept in poor water conditions. Due to their long, narrow tails, they can be vulnerable to damage from fin-nipping species. Overfeeding can cause digestive issues and swim bladder problems.
Peaceful
Pin Tail Guppies are peaceful yet lively swimmers. They are highly social, preferring to be kept in groups of six or more. Males are often seen displaying their elongated, needle-like tails while swimming in open spaces, especially during courtship displays. Their graceful swimming style makes them an attractive sight in planted aquariums.
The Pin Tail Guppy (Poecilia reticulata) is a selectively bred variety that features a unique, elongated tail fin tapering to a fine point, resembling a pin. This tail shape not only enhances their graceful swimming style but also makes them a standout among guppy strains. Originating from wild guppies in South America, Pin Tail Guppies have been bred for both color and form, resulting in a wide range of vibrant patterns. They are hardy, adaptable, and prolific breeders, making them suitable for beginners and experts alike. With proper care, clean water, and a balanced diet, they can live up to 3 years while providing constant movement and beauty in the aquarium.
