A staple of high-quality guppy flakes or pellets should be given daily, with live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms offered several times a week for color enhancement. Vegetable matter like blanched spinach, cucumber, or zucchini improves digestion and boosts immunity.
Livebearer – females give birth to fully developed fry
Metalhead Guppies breed like other guppies, with females giving birth every 4–6 weeks. A single female can produce 20–60 fry depending on age and size. Fry should be separated into a nursery tank or given ample plant cover to avoid being eaten by adults. Breeding is effortless under stable conditions, making them an excellent choice for beginners who want to try breeding livebearers.
Keep pH between 6.8 and 7.8 and water hardness on the moderate to high side. Perform weekly 25–30% water changes to maintain water quality. Metalhead Guppies appreciate planted tanks with moderate lighting and a gentle flow that allows them to display their fins without stress.
Susceptible to fin rot, ich, and bacterial infections in poor water conditions. Due to their long fins, they can be targeted by fin-nipping tank mates. Overfeeding can lead to swim bladder issues and obesity.
Peaceful
Metalhead Guppies are peaceful, curious, and very active. They are known for constantly exploring their surroundings and displaying to one another. Males often swim in open areas, showing off their metallic head sheen, while females tend to stick closer to plants and decorations. They thrive in social groups and rarely show aggression, except mild chasing during courtship.
The Metalhead Guppy (Poecilia reticulata) is a selectively bred strain that features a distinct metallic sheen on the head area, giving it a bold and eye-catching look. Native in wild form to South America, guppies have been bred worldwide for unique colors and fin shapes, and the Metalhead variety is one of the most striking results of that selective breeding. These guppies are peaceful, adaptable, and prolific breeders, making them an excellent choice for planted tanks, nano aquariums, and community setups. They are hardy, thrive on a mixed diet of protein and vegetables, and can adapt to a wide range of water conditions. With proper care and stable water parameters, their colors will remain vibrant, and they will live up to 3 years while continuously adding life and movement to your aquarium.
