A balanced diet is essential to maintain their vibrant colors and fin health. Offer a staple of high-quality flake or pellet food, supplemented with live or frozen treats like brine shrimp and daphnia. Blanched spinach or zucchini can be given occasionally for added fiber and vitamins.
Livebearer – females give birth to free-swimming fry every 4–6 weeks
These guppies are prolific livebearers. Females can store sperm and produce multiple batches of fry from a single mating. Gestation lasts about 21–30 days, and a healthy female can give birth to 20–60 fry at once. Fry should be separated into a nursery tank or provided with dense plant cover to avoid predation from adults and tank mates.
Maintain clean, well-oxygenated water with stable parameters. A pH between 6.8 and 7.8, moderate to high hardness, and a stable temperature in the mid-to-upper 70s °F is ideal. Weekly water changes of 25–30% help keep nitrate levels low and promote overall health.
Prone to fin rot, ich, and bacterial infections if kept in poor water conditions. Overfeeding can lead to bloating and swim bladder issues. Long fins may tear if kept with fin-nipping tank mates.
Peaceful
Dumbo Ear Guppies are peaceful, curious, and active swimmers. They enjoy exploring plants and decorations, often displaying their large pectoral “dumbo” fins while gliding gracefully through the tank. They thrive in groups of six or more and are known for their social interactions. Males may occasionally display mild chasing behavior during courtship but are generally non-aggressive.
The Dumbo Ear Guppy (Poecilia reticulata) is a selectively bred variety of guppy known for its oversized pectoral fins that resemble the ears of the cartoon elephant “Dumbo.” Native to South America in the wild form, guppies have been bred worldwide to create spectacular color and fin variations. These guppies are peaceful, active, and highly adaptable, making them suitable for community aquariums. They are livebearers, with females giving birth to free-swimming fry that can quickly grow in number if conditions are favorable. Their diet should be varied and protein-rich, with occasional vegetable matter to support digestion. They thrive in clean, well-maintained water with moderate hardness and a stable temperature. Ideal for planted tanks, they use plants for cover, fry protection, and as grazing surfaces for biofilm. With proper care, their lifespan can reach up to 3 years, making them both beautiful and rewarding to keep.
