A balanced omnivorous diet will maintain their vibrant colors and health. Feed a staple of high-quality guppy flakes or micro-pellets daily, with live or frozen protein sources such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia several times per week. Supplement with blanched vegetables like spinach or cucumber for added fiber.
Livebearer – females give birth to fully formed free-swimming fry every 4–6 weeks
Like other guppies, Black Tiger Guppies are prolific breeders. Females can produce 20–60 fry every 4–6 weeks, even without a recent mating, due to their ability to store sperm. Breeding is best done in a planted tank or with a breeding box to protect fry from adult fish.
Maintain stable water conditions with a pH of 6.8–7.8 and moderate to high hardness. Perform 25–30% weekly water changes to keep nitrate levels low. Avoid strong currents; a gentle filter flow is best for these active swimmers.
Common health concerns include fin rot, ich, and bacterial infections if water quality is poor. Their flowing tails can be damaged by aggressive or fin-nipping species, so choose tank mates carefully.
Peaceful and sociable
Black Tiger Guppies are active, curious, and social fish that love swimming throughout the tank. They are peaceful toward other tank mates but may show mild chasing behavior during courtship. Their bold stripes and dark coloration make them a visual standout in community aquariums.
